Irony

Irony

Irony is an implied discrepancy between what is said and what is meant. There are three kinds of irony. Verbal irony is when an author says one thing and means something else. Dramatic irony is when an audience perceives something that a character in the literature does not know. Irony of situation is a discrepancy between the expected result and actual results. Irony has existed in my life in many ways when I talk to people like my father or sister.

The poem "Richard Cory" By Edwin Arlington Robinson is about a guy who is wealthy and everyone envied him in town."In fine, we thought he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place." The irony to the story is people wanted to be like him because he was rich but they don't anymore because he killed himself as if he had a bad soul. He was schooled in grace and he dressed like a gentlemen with a suit and it made people wish to be like him or have what he had. The story of Richard Cory can be compared to many peoples lives. Many people get envied like singers and actors and you don't really realize how their lives really are. People would have love to have the life Richard Cory had but they wouldn't want to kill them selves just like he did.

In the story "Lamb Of The Slaughter" By Roald Dahl Patrick Maloney is a detective his wife Mary Maloney is a stay at home wife. One day Patrick comes home from work and has to tell his wife some news that he knows won't please her. He doesn't let us know what it is but his wife reaction to what he has said told us everything. She leaves with the feeling of shock and trying not to believe what he said she leaves to make dinner for her husband."A leg of lamb. All right then, they would have lamb for supper. She carried it upstairs, holding the thin bone-end of it with both her hands. For God's sake, he said, hearing her, but not turning round. Don't make supper for me. I'm going out. At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head. she stepped back a pace, waiting, and the funny thing was that he remained standing there for at least four or five seconds, gently swaying. Then he crashed to the carpet. The violence of the crash, the noise, the small table overturning, helped bring her out of her shock."At the end of the story Mary gives the lamb leg to the cops to eat it for dinner for all the hard work they have done. The irony of the story is the cops ate the weapon that killed patrick. Mary didn't get arrested because she made seem as if she wasn't there.

"The House That Slaves Built" By Gardiner Harris is about the White House that Barack Obama and his family live now that wasn't welcoming to African Americans 200 years ago. Taking it back to the 1800 Thomas Jefferson was living with nearly one dozen slave workers."The White House was built by crews of black laborers both slave and free. Today, more than 200 years later, Barack Obama's family making the White House their home is a powerful symbol of change for Americans of all races." It makes us see how far African Americans have come to they were slaves before but now we have an African American president that is leading our country and maybe even ending the racism and segregation people have against others from different ethnicities. It makes us see the irony before African American were slaves and now we have a black president.

The cartoon is ironic because he is running away from bees and jumping into the ocean full of jelly fishes. Either way somethimg is going to happen to him he gets stung by bees or he will get stung by jellyfishes.

In conclusion irony is an implied discrepancy between what is said and what is meant. In the stories Richard Cory,Lamb To The Slaughter and in The House The Slaves Built they all have irony taking place in the story.Irony is part of our everyday life and even in stories.
